What Is A Facial Cleanser – The Staple Of Any Skin Care Regimen!

When it comes to a daily skin care regiment, a facial cleanser is an absolute must. It may seem simple enough, but what is a facial cleanser exactly? What makes certain facial cleansers better than others? I hope this post serves to provide you with some background information on the purpose of using a facial cleanser and what to look for when finding a cleanser product that is right for you.

The Purpose

A facial cleanser does to the face what a good body cleanser does to the body: to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oils, dirt, and other pollutants from your face. Why is this important? This acts to unclog pores and prevent unwanted skin conditions like acne. We all know how frustrating it is to wake up in the morning to find an unwanted zit on our face, especially on an important day like the first day of school or a job interview. Pimples don't follow anyone's schedule except to thrive when those prone to acne don't follow a regular skin care routine.

Cleanser Types

Depending on your skin-type, certain facial cleansers might be more well-suited to you than others. Here are a few examples:

  1. Active Cleanser: suitable for oily skin to prevent breakouts --> everyday use may cause excessive skin irritation.
  2. Creamy Lotion-Type: for those with very dry skin, not good for oily or even some normal skin types.
  3. Alcohol-free: It is important to find a facial cleanser that is alcohol-free because products with alcohol-related chemicals or compounds tend to cause excessive drying of the skin.
  4. pH-balanced: because the skin's surface pH is on average 4.7, it is important to find facial cleansers that do no upset the pH balance of the skin to allow for healthier, more vibrant skin.

Trial and Error

When you go to the local drug store and find yourself in an aisle chalked full of different skin care products, it can be extremely overwhelming. All the different brands and types of products available, it's almost shocking! The bottom line is in general, there is no one single best stand-alone product, despite what we would all like to have.

What works amazing for one person might be counterproductive for another person. For example, if dry skin is dragging you down, you of course want to look for a facial cleanser that lends itself to hydrating your skin and preventing additional moisture loss. You wouldn't want to use a facial cleanser that someone with oily skin is using because those cleansers are typically stronger and can exacerbate dry skin problems in those who already suffer with dry skin.

As with a lot of things in life, when it comes to choosing the right skin cleanser for you, it is simply a matter of trial and error. While at times, it may seem discouraging and downright expensive over time, don't give up. There are literally hundreds of skin care products to choose from that cater to those with oily skin, acne-prone skin, dry skin, combination-type skin, or really sensitive skin. In due time and with proper guidance, you'll most definitely find the facial cleanser that works for you.

Suggested Use

Typically, the facial cleanser acts as the first step to a basic 3-step daily facial regiment that will be discussed in future posts. If you're curious what facial cleanser I use, CLICK HERE to check out my ZENMED product review.

  1. Thank you for this! I was never one to use cleansers, as my facial skin is dry and any products that I used – like cleansers and toners – left my face feeling dry and tight.
I had no idea that cleansers could be creamy! I will have to see if I can find some. My skin is very sensitive and fussy about what goes on it!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed my post! There is so much to learn about skin care, it is truly a fascinating subject. I have plenty of content on the way. Please stay tuned! 🙂

  2. I have very dry skin and my makeup table is filled with tons of facial cleansers! The most effective ones for me have been Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser and St. Ives Nourished and Smooth Oatmeal Scrub and Mask.

I try to stick with mild soaps in the shower but, my one vice is that I like my shower water very hot. Do you think that could be a reason for my skin drying out so easily?

Loved your article. I look forward to reading more!

    1. Hi Marty! I’m glad you enjoyed reading through my article. In regards to your question, I know the feeling of a hot shower is one of the most relaxing things you can do during the day, but the truth is really hot showers are not too good for your skin in the long run, especially in the winter months. I found this interesting article that I think you will find informative at the following link: https://www.bcm.edu/news/skin-and-hair/hot-showers-harmful-to-skin-in-winter.

  3. I have to admit, I’ve just been using good old faithful soap and water for my face but I’ve been finding that it’s really not agreeing with my skin lately. So, I figured I had better ‘bite the bullet’ and do a little skincare research to maybe use something that is meant for my face. This has been useful – thanks!

    1. Good evening Gaz! I’m really glad you got something out of my post. I’m really working hard to prepare a number of follow-up posts that go into the issue of understanding your skin type in order to use the right products for you. Please check back periodically. Best regards. 🙂

  4. Wish I’d read this before I bought my cleanser yesterday. LoL. I think I did a pretty good job with my choice, since it’s creamy and there is no alcohol in it.

I have to agree with you that sometimes you really do have to try different products to find what works for you. I don’t think that some people get that though.

Sometimes it’s hard to make a choice with so many brands on the market. But I can use this article as my checklist the next time I need to buy one, if I’m not pleased with the one I bought yesterday.

    1. Hi Vanessa! Thanks for taking a look at my post. It definitely can be overwhelming when it comes to shopping for a good facial cleanser, especially when the supermarket has shelves lined with different skin care products. It sounds like you picked a decent facial cleanser, but if for whatever reason, you don’t like it, you should definitely check out the facial cleanser that I have been using for 10 years now from ZENMED. 7. Never actually checked for alcohol in my cleanser but I’m going to now. My daughters face is always dry, going to check it for alcohol. Most likely it does and we will be looking for something better.
    Thanks,
    Toni

  8. Facial cleansers is literally the first thing I bring with me to my bathroom every morning when I wake up and before I go to sleep! I have small pores so I don’t really need other types of skincare products and only use facial cleaners from reputable Korean brands (they tend to be higher in quality at least). My skin always feel so smooth and clean everytime! Thanks for this article

    1. Greetings! Thanks for checking out my post on facial cleansers. I’m actually not too familiar with Korean brands of skin care products. If someone wanted to try a Korean brand out, which brands(s) would you suggest?
