Mother Dirt Reviews – AO+ Mist for Face and Body

You may have stumbled upon this page in search of Mother Dirt Reviews on one of their several products, or you may have found this page on accident. In either case, my hope is that by providing you with my personal experience with the product and the company Mother Dirt, you will leave here better informed to make a personal decision to try one of their amazing products.

My Experience

This summer, I happened to be surfing the web looking for updates in the skin care world when I came across a company called Mother Dirt. My first thought was "what a bold and unusual name for a company!" I decided to click on their website and learn more about them. The more I read, the more curious I became to try one of their products. They kept on talking about our "skin biome" and how it important it was to have a special group of bacteria on our skin called Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) to improve the overall health of our skin. Their hallmark product is the Mother Dirt AO+ Mist for Face and Body, which literally has live bacteria within the spray bottle that you spray onto your body as a mist! You can find out more information about our skin biome and AOB HERE.

what is a skin microbiome

OMG! Bacteria On My Skin!

I think most people's reaction to spraying live bacteria on your body probably wouldn't be a good one, but I wasn't too concerned about it because AOB are truly good bacteria with no downside and decades of science to prove it! There have never been any reported cases of illness or disease related to the use of AOB. These bacteria are literally incapable of causing an infection on or inside or bodies.

They're naturally regulated by the amount of sweat our body produces, so there is not enough food (aka sweat) in a given area for all the AOBs, they will starve and die. This specific sweat mechanism is one of the many processes at play that prevent AOB from causing an infection.

AOB have elaborate, delicate cell membranes so they are very sensitive to chemicals. As a result, any use of conventional soaps or detergents is very likely to wipe them right out! The reason why this is a problem is because without the "good" bacteria presentMother Dirt Reviews (AOB), the "bad" bacteria on our skin are able to have a stronger presence, which causes challenges in the long term.

For this reason, the suggested use is to apply the AO+ Mist spray after showering, applying conventional products, swimming in pools, etc. This is what I personally do every morning after my shower. Once I've finished drying off and applying moisturizer to my body, I spray my body all over. It's actually quite an invigorating experience! If you haven't completely waken up by the end of your shower, this will likely do it.

Within a week or two of using the AO+ Mist, I noticed a definite improvement in my overall skin health! My skin felt more moisturized and my natural oils were more in check. I honestly haven't had the overall complexion of my body look this good in years. It's been very exciting.

Given that the price tag is a little hefty, being $49, I've gone to using the AO+ Mist from every day to every other day or whenever I feel like I need it after I've been sweating profusely (ie gym workout). I haven't really noticed a decrease in product effectiveness by making this change.

One of the main goals of the company with this product is to enable the product user to either add this product into their current skin regimen, or perhaps reduce the number of other skin care products you feel are necessary after beginning the AO+ Mist. For example, there have been some users that have claimed to decrease or eliminate altogether their use of deodorant. However, given that I'm a guy and pretty active, I still use my normal amount of deodorant. However, if your lifestyle or career allows for that type of deodorant experiment, I say why not?

Package Delivered in Style!

When you order the AO+ Mist from Mother Dirt, it is delivered to you in pharmaceutical-grade packaging that keeps the product in the ideal temperature range. Since AOB does not do well with preservatives, the product has a unique expiration date.

Product Storage: The Choice is Yours

Mother Dirt Reviews - Expiration DateIt is important to realize you have two main options for product storage, depending on your preference. You can either store the product at room temperature, in which case you should use the product by 4 weeks from when you receive it.

Or, you can keep the product refrigerated, and have up until the expiration date listed on the bottle to use it. This is typically between the 5-6 month range.

I personally keep mine refrigerated because I enjoy the cool mist on my body in the mornings when I'm getting ready for work. But, if the cool spray is too much for you, you can consider keeping it at room temperature instead.

Company Philosophy

Mother Dirt is truly an amazing, genuine, science-based company dedicated to maintaining full transparency to the ingredients they use when formulating their biome-friendly products. In fact, they are MADE SAFE certified with the official seal to verify that the AO+ Mist is free of any chemicals known to harm human health or the environment. This is one of many examples proving their amazing track record and commitment to their customers and the environment.

Mother Dirt is partnered with AOBiome, which is their research partner dedicated to researching the skin microbiome and more specifically the role of Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB). AOBiome is studying the potential therapeutic applications that reintroducing AOB on skin may have on skin health. If you're interested, you can find additional information about their research on their website:

  • Revolutionary, novel skin care product
  • Markedly improved the overall look and feel of my skin
  • Motherdirt offers first-time customers a 20% DISCOUNT and FREE SHIPPING!
  • Product formulated without: fragrance, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and preservatives
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Non-irritating
  • Allergy-tested
  • Dermatologist reviewed
  • Sensitive skin friendly

  • Product Price: $49
  • If you feel like you can't reduce your current skin care regimen to make room for AO+ Mist, adding the product onto your current regimen may feel overwhelming (adding a little extra time to your morning routines)
  • It is recommended you apply the AO+ Mist last after you've done everything else so that the AOB can work on your skin and not die! They are very sensitive bacteria to other more conventional skin care products. This can prove to be annoying sometimes.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I feel like this company is providing a revolutionary skin care product that I think will continue to become more popular and mainstream as more and more people find out about it. I have been using the product for 3 months now and have continued to have improved skin health and improved complexion. I would definitely recommend the AO+ Mist to anybody willing to try a more unconventional skin care product.

My Overall Rating: 9.5/10

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this.I should definitely try this product. I have been searching for a suitable skin care product to purchase. I hope this product works for me.

How long should I wait before I expect to see results and does this product have any possible side effect?

    1. Hi John! Thanks for taking a look at my review for the AO+ Mist. I’m glad you found it informative. With all the skin care products out there on the market, they all start to sound the same! What caught my attention with Mother Dirt was the fact that there philosophy and approach to healthy skin was so different from the mainstream perspective and I wanted to give it a shot.

Speaking from my own experience, I noticed an improvement in the overall look and feel of my skin within 1-2 weeks. As far as I can tell from my own research, there haven’t been any reported major side effects. If for some reason, you do experience a major skin reaction (which I don’t think you will) please let me know and I can get in touch with Mother Dirt.

I’m really excited for you to try the AO+ Mist product. Please do let me know how it works for you.

  2. Thank you for sharing this post Kent, I’m always up to learn more about ways to take care of my appearance, especially my face.

Seems like a solid product that I wouldn’t mind trying and while yes it is expensive, there’s still some good qualities with this product such as being natural, Hypoallergenic, Non-irritating and Allergy-tested.

It doesn’t get more natural than live bacteria! 🙂

What would you recommend for male oily skin?

    1. Hi Eric! Thanks for checking out my product review for the AO+ Mist from Mother Dirt. This company definitely goes above and beyond to make sure the products their selling are safe for both us (the consumer) and the environment. I’m glad you’re considering trying the product, it is definitely worth a try to see how your skin responds to the AOB.

For oily skin, I’m sure you use a facial cleanser of some kind. I would definitely keep using that and follow up with the AO+ Mist. You might even find that the spray helps balance the oil production of your skin. Please feel free to ask many any other questions that might come up, I’ll be happy to help. And if you do decide to try the AO+ Mist, please let me know how you like it.

  3. This is a very interesting article on a product that I have never heard of at all.

It seems to me like this is very similar to the probiotics or prebiotics that you take to counteract antibiotics.

I noticed that you mentioned that you use the product after you take a shower and after you put on moisturizer. Do you have to wait until your moisturizer is completely absorbed before you spray it on?

Thanks for opening my eyes up to a completely new product.

    1. Hi Denee! I’m glad you were able to learn something from my product review. Yes, our skin biome is definitely conceptually similar to our gut microbiome. The more balanced it is, the better off we are in terms of overall health.

The moisturizer that I use absorbs really fast so usually once I’ve rubbed it in, I go straight for the AO+ Mist. I don’t think it’s necessary to wait any longer than by the time you’re done rubbing in your moisturizer of choice. I hope this helps.

If you do decide to try Mother Dirt’s AO+ Mist, please let me know how it worked for you. Best regards. 🙂

  4. the name of product mother dirt is unusual but very interesting spraying good bacteria in body is really different concept.I noticed that you mentioned that you use the product after you take a shower and after you put on moisturizer. Do you have to wait until your moisturizer .I don’t know you can do that is it safe for sensitive skin?Does it ship worldwide.

    1. Greetings! Thanks for visiting my product review page. Unless you are using the Mother Dirt moisturizer, which is “biome friendly”, it is definitely recommended that you use the AO+ Mist after you’ve applied moisturizer because if you apply the spray before the moisturizer, you run the risk of the chemicals and compounds in the moisturizer killing the AOB (beneficial bacteria), which would be counterproductive. Mother Dirt has gone through extensive testing to ensure that their products are sensitive skin friendly, hypoallergenic, and allergy-tested.

Mother Dirt does ship internationally (outside U.S.), but unfortunately they charge a flat fee of $50 for all international shipments. The reason for this is that AO+ Mist is time and temperature-sensitive, so extra special care needs to be taken when shipping it out. To insure your AOB is in optimal condition, Mother Dirt expedites shipping from the US and ships with cold packs. They hope to streamline the process in the future and take advantage of economies of scale to make products more accessible via local distributors. I hope this helps. 🙂

  5. Hello Ganthus7,

I was shocked when I read about bacteria being sprayed onto your skin. Thank you for sharing this product! I have a friend who has very bad skin, so definitely a product to recommend.

I believe he has eczema. Do you think this product would benefit him?

    1. Hi Eric! Thanks for checking out my post, I’m glad you found it interesting! Officially, Mother Dirt does not make any formal claim that their product(s) can be used to treat any medical conditions like eczema, rosacea, etc. However, if your friend is willing to try something a little more unconventional, I don’t think trying the AO+ Mist will do any harm to their skin and might end up improving their skin’s overall condition, which is what the product was designed to do. In short, while the AO+ Mist cannot officially claim to treat rosacea, the fact that the product has the ability to restore our skin microbiome can allow for an improvement in skin’s overall appearance and texture. Please feel free to ask me any additional questions if you have them, I’ll be more than happy to help.
